This is my Winter Maintenance Checklist
Before winter hits, there are a few things you need to do around the house before it gets too cold.
Here is my list of maintenance that you might want to do as well.
1 - Turn off the faucets/Taps on the outside of the house. The water in the taps on the outside of the house can freeze and cause the pipe to break. This would cause a big leak and definitely not what you want to be dealing with when it's -10 degrees outside.
2 - Weather stripping around doors and windows. Checking and replacing the worn-out weather stripping will save you energy and keep your house warm during the winter.
3 - Check smoke detectors. Most people check their smoke detectors a few times a year. If you haven't checked them in a while I would recommend checking them now.
4 - Clean your self-cleaning oven. I have a self-cleaning oven and when it cleans, the air quality in the house is not that great, so I would recommend cleaning your stove before it gets too cold, so you can open up the windows and air the room out.
5 - Change the furnace filter. This is very important to do before you start using your furnace for the winter. You want a clean filter so the furnace gets enough air to it and to help the air quality in your home.
6 - Clean coils on your fridge - The coils at the back of your fridge get very dusty throughout the year and taking a vacuum to it will help the fridge work more efficiently.
7 - Clean and WETT inspect your fireplace. WETT stands for (Wood Energy Technology Transfer). The inspector will make sure your fireplace it in good condition (now cracks..etc) and ready for you to burn wood throughout the winter.
Doing a few things around the house will make your winter a lot easier.
